week 4

During the class, Ms Sharon assigned us an assignment which is the first hands-on project. It is to enhance our understanding of a building system and how the shape, materials and other factors of the building affect its structural stability and distribute and support the loads through exploration of an arch structure. So, Ms. Sharon assigned us this project which is conducted in groups using plasticine to simulate blocks and bricks. My group mates are Stella, Lulu and Yuki.
At 8:10am, we started to build the structure based on the discussion we have done last week.

Process

Start off by cutting the original shape of the plasticine into stripes.

We reshaped it by rolling and cutting them in order to form a brick-liked cuboid which is about 2cm long to simulate bricks.
These are the 'bricks' we have done.

Furthermore, when comes to column building, we stacked the 'bricks' up together so it creates
a wider surface area. A wider surface area provides a higher stability.
The columns are 3 inches tall. (Minimum height)
Even though we can actually build it taller but we chose not to doing it because according to my knowledge, the lower the gravitational force, the more stable the structure is.

These shapes were formed and act as the arch. It later were placed on top of the columns.

We added brick-liked cuboid on top of the column which surrounded the arch in order to increase the stability so the arch will not collapsed easily.
We added some decorations onto the arch to beautify it.

These photos were taken during the competitions.
Some students are called to shake the table in order to create vibration which is earthquake in real life. It's to test the stability of the arch. Our arch is abled to withstand the vibration as it did not collapse.

Students are called to throw some plasticine balls act as hail storm. Unfortunately, our arch could not withstand the hail storm and finally collapsed.

Conclusion

Through this assignment, I've realised that building an arch is not easy as I expected. It takes quite a lot of time to build a real structure or a real bridge as it doesn't seems as easy as its look. Inner parts of it must have something to be placed in between them in order to stabilise it.  To improve the strength and the aesthetics of our arch structure, I suggest we should add wooden sticks or toothpick in the inner part of the structure.

Besides, I've heard about a quote previously, it mentioned 'A mediocre team always beats a talented individual.' So, I realised having team work is really important when comes to group assignment. It's all about good preparation from a good communication.

This is the presentation board of our group.
